Ashmore, M. & Reed, D. (2000) Innocence and Nostalgia in Conversation Analysis: The Dynamic Relations of Tape and Transcript. In: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung 11-9. [Abstract] [BibTeX] [URL] |
| Abstract: This paper attempts an analysis of some of the methodological practices of Conversation Analysis (CA); in particular, tape recording and transcription. The paper starts from the observation that, in the CA literature, these practices, and the analytic objects they create (the tape and the transcript), are accorded different treatment: simply put, for CA the tape is a "realist" object, while the transcript is a "constructivist" one. The significance of this difference is explored through an analysis of the dynamics of CA practice. We argue that the "constructivist transcript" is premised on an understanding of CA as predominantly concerned with maximising its "analytic utility": a concern of one distinct temporal stage of CA work: that of the "innocent" apprehension of objects in the "first time through". The "realist tape", in contrast, is based on a different aspect of the work of CA: its quest for greater "evidential utility", achieved by the "nostalgic" revisiting of previously produced objects for purposes of checking them against each other; work done in the "next time through". We further argue that both the ontology and the epistemology of CA's objects are changed in any next time encounter. We conclude with a cautionary speculation on the currently-projected, transcript-free, digital future of CA. | |||||

Barras, C.; Geoffrois, E.; Wu, Z. & Liberman, M. (2000) Transcriber: Development and Use of a Tool for Assisting Speech Corpora Production. In: Speech Communication 335-22. [Abstract] [BibTeX] |
| Abstract: We present Transcriber, a tool for assisting in the creation of speech corpora, and describe some aspects of its development and use. Transcriber was designed for the manual segmentation and transcription of long duration broadcast news recordings, including annotation of speech turns, topics and acoustic conditions. It is highly portable, relying on the scripting language Tcl/Tk with extensions such as Snack for advanced audio functions and tcLex for lexical analysis, and has been tested on various Unix systems and Windows. The data format follows the XML standard with Unicode support for multilingual transcriptions. Distributed as free software in order to encourage the production of corpora, ease their sharing, increase user feedback and motivate software contributions, Transcriber has been in use for over a year in several countries. As a result of this collective experience, new requirements arose to support additional data formats, video control, and a better management of conversational speech. Using the annnotaion graphs framework recently formalized, adaption of the tool towards new tasks and support of dierent data formats will become easier. | |||||

(ed.): Connectivity in Grammar and Discourse, Hamburg Studies in Multilingualism 5Amsterdam: Benjamins. [Abstract] [BibTeX] |
| Abstract: This paper discusses methodological aspects of the use of electronic language corpora for the study of connectivity. We demonstrate how a corpus-based approach was used to investigate functional characteristics of coordinating elements in sentence- or utterance-initial position across different languages (English, German, Old Swedish and Turkish), across different modalities (written and spoken) and across the diachronic dimension (historic and modern languages). Our focus is on the difficulties we encountered in this study when attempting to transfer corpus-based methods developed for the analysis of corpora of modern, written language to the analysis of corpora of historic or spoken language. We suggest an abstract corpus-linguistic workflow and discuss where and how this workflow differs according to the corpus type, and how well its individual steps are supported by current corpus technology. | |||||

| Abstract: The need for annotated corpora in the field of natural interactivity and its sub-disciplines issteadily increasing. Annotated corpora are being used to, e.g., develop and evaluate interactive speechsystems, produce animated faces, and develop gesture recognition systems. The more natural the system must behave, the stronger are the demands on the quality and sophistication of the underlying corpusannotation. Thus, good tools are in high demand in order to facilitate advanced corpus annotationprocesses. In this chapter we describe ongoing work towards building a general-purpose tool for coding natural interactive communicative behaviour. We briefly present a review of existing natural interactivity coding tools followed by the common NITE project coding tool specification. Based on the specification, we describe our work on the interface to the NITE WorkBench for Windows, or NWB. | |||||

Bird, S. & Cassidy, S. (2000) Querying Databases of Annotated Speech. In: Database Technologies: Proceedings of the Eleventh Australasian Database Conference, 12-20. Canberra: IEEE Computer Society. [Abstract] [BibTeX] [URL] |
| Abstract: Annotated speech corpora are databases consisting of signal data along with time-aligned symbolic 'transcriptions'. Such databases are typically multidimensional, heterogeneous and dynamic. These properties present a number of tough challenges for representation and query. The temporal nature of the data adds an additional layer of complexity. This paper presents and harmonizes two independent efforts to model annotated speech databases, one at Macquarie University and one at the University of Pennsylvania. Various query languages are described, along with illustrative applications to a variety of analytical problems. The research reported here forms a part of several ongoing projects to develop platform-independent open-source tools for creating, browsing, searching, querying and transforming linguistic databases, and to disseminate large linguistic databases over the internet. | |||||

| Abstract: We describe a formal model for annotating linguistic artifacts, from which we derive an application programming interface (API) to a suite of tools for manipulating these annotations. The abstract logical model provides for a range of storage formats and promotes the reuse of tools that interact through this API.We focus first on “Annotation Graphs,” a graph model for annotations on linear signals (such as text and speech) indexed by intervals, for which efficient database storage and querying techniques are applicable. We note how a wide range of existing annotated corpora can be mapped to this annotation graph model. This model is then generalized to encompass a wider variety of linguistic “signals,” including both naturally occuring phenomena (as recorded in images, video, multi-modal interactions, etc.), as well as the derived resources that are increasingly important to the engineering of natural language processing systems (such as word lists, dictionaries, aligned bilingual corpora, etc.). We conclude with a review of the current efforts towards implementing key pieces of this architecture. | |||||

In: Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation, 364-370. Paris: ELRA. [Abstract] [BibTeX] [URL] |
| Abstract: Four diverse tools built on the Annotation Graph Toolkit are described. Each tool associates linguistic codes and structures with timeseries data. All are based on the same software library and tool architecture. TableTrans is for observational coding, using a spreadsheet whose rows are aligned to a signal. MultiTrans is for transcribing multi-party communicative interactions recorded using multi-channel signals. InterTrans is for creating interlinear text aligned to audio. TreeTrans is for creating and manipulating syntactic trees. This work demonstrates that the development of diverse tools and re-use of software components is greatly facilitated by a common highlevel application programming interface for representing the data and managing input/output, together with a common architecture for managing the interaction of multiple components. | |||||

Bird, S. & Simons, G. (2002) Seven Dimensions of Portability for Language Documentation and Description. In: Language 79557-582. [Abstract] [BibTeX] |
| Abstract: The process of documenting and describing the world's languages is undergoing radical transformation with the rapid uptake of new digital technologies for capture, storage, annotation, and dissemination. While these technologies greatly enhance our ability to create digital data, their uncritical adoption has compromised our ability to preserve this data. The new digital language resources of all kinds -- lexicons, interlinear texts, grammars, language maps, field notes, recordings -- are difficult to reuse and less portable than the conventional printed resources they replace. This article is concerned with the portability of digital language resources, specifically with their ability to transcend computer environments, scholarly communities, domains of application, and the passage of time. We begin by reviewing current uses of software tools and digital technologies for language documentation and description. This sheds light on how digital language resources are created and managed, and leads to an analysis of portability problems in the seven areas of content, format, discovery, access, citation, preservation, and rights. After characterizing each problem we articulate a set of values which underlie our intuitions about good and bad practices, and which serve as requirements for new practices supporting the creation of portable language resources. Next we lay out an extensive set of recommendations to serve as a starting point for the community-based effort that we envision. We conclude with a discussion of OLAC, the Open Language Archives Community, which provides a process that may be used to identify community-agreed best practices over the long term. | |||||

| Abstract: Current XML technologies can provide a powerful underpinning to any newlinguistic data repository . We can minimize cost to the community by capitalizing onexternal tools intended for XML users in general. We propose that since most XML useprivileges element hierarchies by making hierarchical structures easy and fast tonavigate, element hierarchies should be used to represent the most important relations inan XML data set. This is the approach taken, for instance, in the TEI. AIF violates thisconstraint by insisting upon one standardized DTD for all data resources, no matter whattheir content or natural structure. We support our argument by exploring ourunderstanding of the reasons behind AIF and showing how they are as well met by ourcounter-proposal. We further describe where our communal interests as linguistic datausers are unique and therefore where resources might best be concentrated. | |||||

| Abstract: Large-scale linguistic annotation is currently employed for a wide range of purposes, including comparing communication under different conditions, testing psycholinguistic hypotheses, and training natural language engines. Current software support for linguistic annotation is poor, with much of it written for one-off tasks using special purpose data representations and data handling routines. This impedes research because software cannot be reused and the resulting annotations can be difficult to use in analyses or applications for which they were not originally intended. This paper argues for a particular vision of how support for linguistic annotation could be provided using XML as the data format and stylesheets as the processing mechanism. | |||||

Deppermann, A. (2000) Ethnographische Gesprächsanalyse: Zu Nutzen und Notwendigkeit von Ethnographie für die Konversationsanalyse. In: Gesprächsforschung 196-124. [Abstract] [BibTeX] [URL] |

(ed.): Proceedings of the LREC 2006 Satellite Workshop on "Merging and Layering Linguistic Information", Genoa 2006, [Abstract] [BibTeX] [URL] |

| Abstract: This paper describes a new research initiative addressing the issue of sustainability of linguistic resources. This initiative is a cooperation between three linguistic collaborative research centres in Germany, which comprise more than 40 individual research projects altogether. These projects are involved in creating manifold language resources, especially corpora, tailored to their particular needs. The aim of the project described here is to ensure an effective and sustainable access of these data by third-party researchers beyond the termination of these projects. This goal involves a number of measures, such as the definition of a common data format to completely capture the heterogeneous information encoded in the individual corpora, the development of user-friendly and sustainably usable tools for processing (e.g. querying) the data, and the specification of common inventories of metadata and terminology. Moreover, the project aims at formulating general rules of best practice for creating, accessing, and archiving linguistic resources. | |||||

Edwards, J. (1992) Computer methods in child language research: four principles for the use of archived data. In: Journal of Child Language 19435-458. [Abstract] [BibTeX] |
| Abstract: With the increasing use of computers in language research, there is a need for caution concerning several new issues of data accountability. This paper presents four principles for archive-based language research: Maximum Readability and Minimum Bias; Consistent Encoding for exhaustive computer search; Systematic Contrastiveness; and Data Comparability in elicitation, transcription and coding. These and related principles are illustrated by examples from existing computer archives, and strategies are suggested for minimizing detrimental effects of violations. Finally, the paper describes some implications of the principles for properties of a field-wide and international standard of transcription of language data. | |||||

| Abstract: Transcriber is a tool for manual annotation of large speech files. It was originally designed for the broadcast news transcription task. The annotation file format was derived from previous formats used for this task, and many related features were hard-coded. In this paper we present a generalization of the tool based on the annotation graph formalism, and on a more modular design. This will allow us to address new tasks, while retaining Transcriber’s simple, crisp user-interface which is critical for user acceptance. | |||||

ten Have, P. (1990) Methodological issues in conversation analysis. In: Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique 2723-51. [Abstract] [BibTeX] [URL] |
| Abstract: Conversation Analysis (CA), a research tradition that grew out of ethnomethodology, has some unique methodological features. It studies the social organization of 'conversation', or 'talk-in-interaction', by a detailed inspection of tape recordings and transcriptions made from such recordings. In this paper, I will describe some of those features in the interest of exploring their grounds. In doing so, I will discuss some of the problems and dilemma's conversation analysts deal with in their daily practice, using both the literature and my own experiences as resources. I will present CA's research strategy as a solution to ethnomethodology's problem of the 'invisibility' of common sense and describe it in an idealized form as a seven step procedure. I will discus some of the major criticisms leveled against it and touch on some current developments. Conversation Analysis is a disciplined way of studying the local organization of interactional episodes, its unique methodological practice has enabled its practitioners to produce a mass of insights into the detailed procedural foundations of everyday life. It has developed some very practical solutions to some rather thorny methodological problems. As such it is methodologically 'impure', but it works. | |||||

| Abstract: This paper presents results from an interdisciplinary cooperation within the Collaborative Research Centre on Multilingualism. First results of this cooperation were published in an earlier paper (BAUMGARTEN et al. 2007) concentrating on an investigation of functional characteristics of coordinating elements in English, German, Old Swedish and Turkish corpora. The aim of the second part of the cooperation was to develop corpus linguistic methods in order to be able to examine word order change in subordinate clauses in older Swedish and Danish texts in comparison to Old West Norse. The starting point for the investigation was the observation that the word order in Swedish main clauses is rather stable from the earliest written sources up to contemporary Swedish, whereas in subordinate clauses, from a diachronic perspective, far-reaching changes can be observed. Starting from the hypothesis that language contact triggered this change, a comparison of an Old Swedish, an Old Danish and an Old West Norse version of the Story of Charlemagne was performed. The West Norse version almost exclusively shows verb second order and no examples of verb late order. In the Danish and the Swedish versions, verb second is also the main option, but more examples of the finite verb in a later position can be found in both texts. In our opinion it seems to be reasonable to suggest that the development of new text types based on Latin models triggered the change that can be observed in the East Norse texts. | |||||

| Abstract: The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) (Bray, et al., 1998) is the emerging standard for data representation and exchange on the World Wide Web. The XML Framework includes very powerful mechanisms for accessing and manipulating XML documents that are likely to significantly impact the way annotated corpora are created and accessed. This paper outlines a few of the possibilities. | |||||

| Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the needs for corpus annotation and exploitation, and some suggested strategies for development of a widely usable and reusable corpus-handling environment. The central plank of our argument is that cross-disciplinary acceptability is no longer an optional extra. |||||
| Abstract: The rapid growth in availability of high-quality recordings of natural spoken dialogue (and natural spoken material more generally) has encouraged us to to improve the interchange of transcripts of such material, in order that these resources be easy to exploit by the scientific community as a whole. In this paper, we describe a new SGML architecture which we have recently adopted for the HCRC Map Task corpus (a corpus of spontaneous task-oriented dialogues) with precisely these issues in view. This architecture is oriented towards ease of processing and update. | |||||

| Abstract: Anvil is a tool for the annotation of audiovisual material containing multimodal dialogue. Annotation takes place on freely definable, multiple layers (tracks) by inserting time-anchored elements that hold a number of typed attribute-value pairs. Higher-level elements (suprasegmental) consist of a sequence of elements. Attributes contain symbols or cross-level links to arbitrary other elements. Anvil is highly generic (usable with different annotation schemes), platform-independent, XMLbased and fitted with an intuitive graphical user interface. For project integration, Anvil offers the import of speech transcription and export of text and table data for further statistical processing. | |||||

| Abstract: Edwards (1992) presents a set of examples from the Child Language Data Exchange System (CHILDES) as prototypes of bad transcription practice. Her discussion is based upon four basic confusions. First, Edwards confuses old and discarded versions of CHAT with current CHAT. Second, she confuses the relation between CHAT standards with the implementation of these standards during the process of reformatting older corpora. Third, she confuses transcription for automatic analysis with transcription for documentation. Fourth, she confuses the CHAT guidelines with the larger CHILDES system. We argue that these confusions have misled Edwards into developing an overly rigid set of principles for data analysis which, if followed literally, could choke off progress in the analysis of spontaneous language samples. | |||||

| Abstract: The Annotation Graph Toolkit is a collection of software supporting the development of annotation tools based on the annotation graph model. The toolkit includes application programming interfaces for manipulating annotation graph data and for importing data from other formats. There are interfaces for the scripting languages Tcl and Python, a database interface, specialized graphical user interfaces for a variety of annotation tasks, and several sample applications. This paper describes all the toolkit components for the benefit of would-be application developers. | |||||

McCarty, W. (2002) Humanities Computing: Essential Problems, Experimental Practice. In: Literary and Linguistic Computing 17103-125. [Abstract] [BibTeX] |
| Abstract: The application of computing to the disciplines of the humanities has two principal outcomes: useful results for the field of application and failures completely to demonstrate what is known. These failures, an inevitable feature of modelling, point to the key question for humanities computing, how we know what we know, and so to the beginning of its own scholarly enquiry. This, I argue, proceeds along three branches, the algorithmic, the metatextual, and the representational. Examining the first of these here I argue for research toward an open-ended, interoperable set of primitives based on previous work in the field and designed for the emerging digital library environment. To set the stage for their further development I argue that the field as a whole does not wait on a theoretical formulation of what humanists do, rather should look to the tradition of experimental knowledge-making as this has been illuminated in recent years by historians, philosophers, and sociologists of science. | |||||

(ed.): Proceedings of ACL '99, Demonstration Abstracts, 12-13. University of Maryland. [Abstract] [BibTeX] |
| Abstract: This paper describes the design and implementation of the MATE workbench, a program which provides support for the annotation of speech and text. It provides facilities for exible display and editing of such annotations, and complex querying of a resulting corpus. The workbench oers a more exible approach than most existing annotation tools, which were often designed with a specic annotation scheme in mind. Any annotation scheme can be used with the MATE workbench, provided it is coded using XML markup (linked to the speech signal, if available, using certain conventions). The workbench uses a transformation language to dene specialised editors optimised for particular annotation tasks, with suitable display formats and allowable editing operations tailored to the task. The workbench is written in Java, which means that it is platform-independent. This paper outlines the design of the workbench software and compares it with other annotation programs. | |||||

Norris, S. (2002) The implication of visual research for discourse analysis: transcription beyond language. In: Visual Communication 197-121. [Abstract] [BibTeX] |
| Abstract: This article identifies some limitations of discourse analysis by analyzing interactions between five boys in which the TV and the computer are featured as mediational means. The incorporation of several modalities into transcripts and a shift in focus from primarily language to human action facilitate a better understanding of the multi-modal interaction involved. The use of conventional transcripts with a focus on language demonstrates that movie- and computer-mediated interactions appear fragmented; by contrast, an inclusion of images into the transcripts, representing central interactions and/or images of a movie or computer screen, demonstrates the significant visual modes that are imperative to the ongoing talk. Just as written words correspond to the oral language, images can exemplify the global interaction among the participants, or they can represent the images on the screen. In addition, viewing an image is much faster than reading a description, so that these images also display the fast pace of the movie- and/or computer-mediated interaction. | |||||

Schiel, F.; Burger, S.; Geumann, A. & Weilhammer, K. (1998) The Partitur Format at BAS. In: Proceedings of the First International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation, 1295-1301. Paris: ELRA. [Abstract] [BibTeX] [URL] |
| Abstract: Most spoken language resources are produced and disseminated together with symbolic information relating to the speech signal. These are for instance orthographic transcripts, labeling and segmentation on the phonologic, phonetic, prosodic, phrasal level. Most of the known formats for these symbolic data are defined in a 'closed form' that is not flexible enough to allow simple and platform-independent processing and easy extensions. At the Bavarian Archive for Speech Signals (BAS) a new format has been developed and used over the last few years that shows some significant advantages over other existing formats. This paper describes the basic principles behind this format, discusses briefly the advantages andgives detailed definitions of the description levels used so far. | |||||
